WWJD - Comic #4
You can tell a lot about a person by the way they answer a question, especially questions they are not prepared for. Mrs. jigg and I are always talking about really random things and much of our "arguments" are usually over stupid things that really have no bearing on our relationship. Sometimes, it gets really heated, but most of the time, it's just interesting to find out how different we are.
People who know me often say that they do not feel that me and my wife have anything in common. And the reality is that we really don't. Everything from Coke and Pepsi, Boston and New York City, and copyright laws versus freedom of information, we disagree on completely.
I don't know how other couples are, but I think our differences really keep us together. For one, the relationship is never boring. All our conversations could potentially be part of a Seinfeld episode.
Some people I know go out and seek people they find commonalities with. I think that instead of common interests, people should just seek people with common goals. It's really hard to share an adventure together if you're not going the same way and looking for the same thing.

These differences listed - cities, views on copyright laws, food preferences - aren't differences that really matter, are they? And that's the fantastic thing about it all - given they are just surface factors, it matters less and less whether you're different from your friends or wife in these areas (and not only because these factors can easily change anyway as we become older), and focus on factors whose differences would matter, as you two undoubtedly do - how you communicate your affection, how you want to raise kids, and how you want to instill values in your family.

@leprovocateur - While it's true that a lot of the stuff I mentioned in my post is really unimportant, I wanted to keep this entry light. We've had a thousand too many conversations regarding how we want to raise our children. We both have the same goal--obviously to do the best job we can so that our children will blossom into great individuals and take on the world. As to how, we're extremely different in our approach. I don't think it's something we can ever agree on. She will probably be a lot more protective than I want her to be and I will probably be a lot more liberal than she wants me to be.
I think we're too different to ever agree on the same approaches in anything important or unimportant in our lives.

A difference in opinion is refreshing and keeps the relationship lively. A difference in principles is the thing that would make two people miserable together.

Amusing - this made me think of mine and my fiancée's arguments. On the surface, they often seem to have no bearing on our relationship, but the arguments themselves - and the way we argue - is revealing of how we see ourselves and each other. Sometimes knowing this makes it fun to argue - but sometimes it makes it much more annoying. Heh.

as long as she loves it too. i know some people who are too logical and think things are all good and they don't pay attention to feelings. but differences are good, i believe. me and D have our strengths and our weaknesses, and they're not in the same things. we help each other every day.
