Being “Unreal”
A couple of people have mentioned that I am “unreal.” One person is
someone who I know that couldn’t really explain what she meant and then
there are those who read my Xanga that have made that comment. My
question is-what does it mean? When someone says that you are “unreal,”
does it mean that you are “not real” as in “fake?” For whatever reason,
the term seems to hold some kind of positive connotation-almost like
“surreal,” but not quite. So for those Xangans who read my Xanga and
think I am “unreal,” can you please clarify yourself? Even if you think
I’m “fake” or if he word “unreal” is supposed to be an insult, that’s
okay. I won’t be offended. I’m just curious.

may be you’re too good to be true
…..or too bad to be true (kidding)
I think some people just don’t believe that there is such a good person like yourself out there. Like the first commenter said, ”maybe are too good to be true.” People in general are more pessimistic and negative, like when they meet darkness, they hope for light, when they actually meet light, they question everything about it.
When people read a blog without knowing or meeting the person first, they create this image of you from with what they gathered from your blog. Usually it is a very good image….very ideal and all. I had a very ideal image of you when I first read your xanga. But that ideal seemed like an illusion because I didn’ t know you in person. It was just this image I had created, so that was “unreal” but when i got to know you a lot better, you had filled in all the crevices of that image.
So, how does your xanga make you unreal? It doesn’t….it’s the interpretation that the readers have of your xanga that make them feel you are unreal.
I have never thought of you as being “unreal” but I’d have to agree with the posts above… maybe more in a sense like “too good to be true”? Well either way, in my book, you being “unreal” would be a compliment.
ryc: thank you for your kind supportive words. It means a lot.
maybe they’re just unfamiliar or in awe that somebody can hold certain qualities that you have. Some people are just in denial u know? and in turn, they put that on you. hope everything is well with you! take care ray leeeeeee! laters. -di
people actually tell you that? that’s pretty frank.
but yes, i would think unreal = fake!
hmm.. i have never met you but from what i read, you don’t seem fake to me. fake implies promoting an image that’s just not who you are. but you seem genuine. so i would assume that unreal in your case just mean one of a kind? hehe.. nothing bad of course. don’t take it too seriously. people don’t even know what they’re talking about half the time. hehe..
hm…maybe pple just don’t think about things as deeply as you do so their comprehension of your feelings and thoughts are shallow which causes them to conclude that you are “unreal”.
Maybe they say that you are “unreal” because you don’t sound the same in real life than in xanga. I have often been called the same thing because in person, i’m carefree and make mistakes but in xanga I guess its more deep into my feelings.
I’ve been reading your xanga for a little while and you don’t seem fake to me. I pretty much agree with the other comments on here. (^ ^) Maybe they just confused/switched unreal with surreal? Since you said that there was one person who couldn’t really explain what she meant perhaps unreal was the only word they could come up with~ for lack of a better word and all that.
ppl who dont noe you will tink ur unreal in which ever way…but mr.ray leeeeeeeee is cool in my book *^o^*
I think this a question you should post to your friends who know you in real life and regularly read your xanga.
My bad, I mean most pose, not post.
That still leaves room for those who actually called you unreal… Where are they??
I’ve been called childish, racist, and white-washed among other things on Xanga and I think it’s absolutely funny sometimes that people get so riled up when they don’t even know me.
My guess here is that you got into a discussion with this person and the person can’t back up their own argument. It happens. Don’t let it faze you.
it means you’re a PC game!
Dude, “unreal” is a compliment. Like you’re so awesome, it’s not possible. I hear people using that word with me that a lot.
you’re like an amazing, addictive drug with an incredible high but with no side effects. there was a disco song with lyrics “…..you ma-ake me feel….u-un-real…”
if i were to say “ur unreal” i would mean it as a joke, like..”ridiculous”
but it might mean pretentious..or impractical, or too idealistic.
I think to call a person fake is to think they put on a big show. However, to call a person “unreal” – you have to know them, personally. And i don’t know you.
i agree with MoDnEtheL, i don’t think unreal means fake, just meant like a joke. you don’t seem fake in my opinion.
lol. unreal, huh? In my opinion, which has a lot of weight to… … me(lol) You are just out of their reality. Everyone has a certain reality, close minded if you may. In my opinion, when you are criticized in anyway you are going above and beyond for good or bad.
don’t think you’re unreal. You do have an interesting ideas.
cheers
I agree with the 1st comment. haha! Kidding. I’m not sure what unreal means to that particular person, but unreal to me has always meant something good. But if the person was perhaps suggesting that you’re a different person online than you are in person, then that person needs to realize that we’re on xanga, and not EdTV (Or RayLeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeTV). You can’t be the exact same person because you’re just typing on a screen… And thanks for the input!
sorry I’m not one of the xangans to tell you what they mean by “unreal” since that’s not a word that would come to mind to describe you. I would take it as a compliment though since if the person thought u were fake, they would just say “fake” no? No one really says “unreal” instead of fake but “fake” get thrown around a lot.
I think unreal generally means “too good to be true,” which is a compliment. otherwise, I feel like people would just use the word fake to describe the other possible meaning.
“unreal” is a compliment, no? like dreamy plenty of awesomeness unreal?
you’re a big fat phony.
i see u didnt really get an answer here
I don’t know how others use the term but for me, the connotation of “unreal” is something that is simply unbelievable. However, I can see how that can also mean “fake.” “Surreal,” now, has a completely different connotation than the other two. I think it’s the same as unbelievable, but because it’s impossible or ridiculous. Does that make sense?
you’re enlightening. thanks for sharing them thoughts.
you’re awesome. real
unreal because you seem so carefree and innocent. it’s not a bad thing, but some of the things you do are so out there like wearing a tie on a date and always paying for a girl. i mean most guys, i hate to say it are not as nice as you. if that explains anything.
When I use that term I usually mean that either the way they behave are the things they say are just either very impressive, very funny, or very liberating personally and that is when I say to them you are unreal!
I think it means that you are special that there is something about you they like I have never used unreal to mean something bad!
unreal in a good way.
youre a toy
I take it as non conventional, outside the norm. Depending on the connotation, it can be either good or bad.
I agree with the first comment that “maybe you’re too good to be true.” You’re “unreal” because you’re like a prince charming for most girls out there.
The formal meaning of “unreal” is imaginary, artificial or insincere. It’s also slang for awesome. In a casual conversation, this is the more likely intention, so it should be taken as a compliment. If someone wanted to tell you that you were insincere, they would probably say “fake” or “phony” instead.
from American Heritage Dictionary… Slang: So remarkable as to elicit disbelief; fantastic.
i’m gonna go with compliment. and i have to agree with it. i was reading your favorites and you listed Pride and Prejiduce as one of your favorite books. my jaw dropped. i have never met a guy who has admitted to liking Pride and Prejiduce or Jane Austin for that matter. remarkable indeed.
well, I think it really depends on how its used and the tone its used. ‘Unreal’, in my opinion, can be both good and bad. It could be used for describing an unbelievable situation, or describing something/someone as ‘ridiculous’, or just as a compliment as ‘this/you’re to good to be true’ kind of deal. so i think you really just have to look at the situation.
