Doing your face on the train
As I’m standing on this train wondering what blog about, there’s a girl seated next to me who has been staring at her mirror and doing her make up for as long as I got on. It’s a very typical thing to see women do their make up on the train in the morning and I have seen some women literally transform in front of my eyes. But for whatever reason, I feel that it’s a private matter–something to be done at home or behind closed doors and not outright in the open.
What’s worse about this woman doing her make up is that she is now plucking her brows. That’s pretty disgusting because all that hair is going to be somehow flying around this well air-conditioned train. The only thing more unhygienic than that is when I see people clip their nails on the train. Who does that?
I’m sure that sometimes, people are running late and utilize their hour long commute to pretty themselves, but I remember one person a few years back that I saw on the train everyday, doing her make up. Obviously, it’s none of my business and I have never approached her about it. But am I the only person who thinks that anything cosmetic should be done at home? Women brushing their hair, doing their nails and now plucking their brows. Yes, they have the right to do it, but when did these things not become private matters anymore?
Ladies, do you do your make up on the train? Would you brush your hair, pluck your brows or even cut your nails?

There’s no law or rule forbidding them not to do it, with this said, it lacks proper manners, etiquette, and might I add very unhygienic…
makeup yes, everything else no. that being said, if that’s an issue, move to japan. they have posters up requesting women to do all those things at home and not on the train
@petitetokio - lol. Really? That’s hilarious.
It’s not so much the make up that bothers me–it’s the other stuff like plucking your brows.

Girls do that ish when driving. Now that’s crazy.
That’s funy, I actually blogged about this a few years ago… and I agree. This is the public, not you rbathroom mirror, type deal. I only do it when ABSOLUTELY necessary, and in the last car in the back, ahhaa.
I might touch up discretely if no one can see me, ie empty carriage but not the full works. Have to admit though (not the plucking parts) how amazing it is to see a woman transform in front of you, I’m a girl and yet…seeing this woman curl her lashes like a pro and pile on the mascara on the London tube is STILL impressive for me…I can’t even do that properly stationery in my own bathroom
i felt sick reading your blog. nails and brows. AHHHHHHHHHHHH.
just be like me and do your makeup in your cubicle. no one can see me. lol
oh, god! i’ve definitely seen someone cut their nails on the metro before and wanted to faux-gag a little.
i’ve done my make-up on the train a few times before, but only because i was running exceptionally late and/or we had important meetings.
but i do agree with you that it’s a very personal matter — i always feel a little strange when people watch me put on make-up, especially boyfriends. it’s very intimate.
ugh okay plucking is a bit too much… atleast on a train and in public
Ehh, i’d just laugh if she poked herself in the eye
putting on makeup is OK as long as the powdery stuff doesn’t get on the people around her. any kind of grooming is gross in a public place!
hey man on the train anything goes. when you see people whip out their dicks on the train, nothing surprises you anymore
As a child I would always be fascinated by the pretty ladies putting on makeup in the train. I really wanted to swipe their bag just so I could see what was in their arsenal. As I got older I realized 1.ladies don’t put on make-up on the train. 2.it takes away from mystery
so now I save that for the cab but never plucking eek!!!
i would never do it on the train but i’ve seen people apply make up on. i don’t care that they do it, just wonder how they don’t get into an accident especially when they put mascara on while standing on a moving train. everything else is just gross.
I feel like them doing their makeup on the train is so much better than them doing it while driving. Safety issues. xD
Touching up of makeup is okay for me. The entire process is really, really messy. It drives me crazy when my roommate puts on makeup in the bathroom, leaves, and I go in and there’s this blanket of foundation everywhere. =_=. Imagine that stuff flying in the air on an A/C’d train. =/
Seriously??? People pluck their eyebrows and cut their nails on the train?? What????
I think putting on lipstick is fine. Brushing your hair is fine. Touching up your makeup is fine. Everything else – please excuse yourself to the bathroom!
I do my make up in the privacy of my own home. I like to pretend that I’m not at all concerned about what I look like in public. XD
yea I actually agree with u on this one. That shit is private. It’s like shaving or whiping your ass. No one needs to know what you do to make you look the way you do – that stuff’s secret
@wonderland7386 - lol. First agreement EVAR!

I only put concealer and mascara in the car. I don’t usually wear a lot of make up during weekdays. As my bf would says “a great artist never reveals his/her secret” lol
it doesn’t bother me to see women doing their make-ups on the train, but one burning question I have is…how do they keep their hands so steady? I can’t even write properly on the train!
I don’t wear makeup. The most I did in public was brush my hair when it was scattered.
I guess some women don’t want to sacrifice hours of sleep to apply makeup.
I do it at home. I’ve never done it in public before.
I’ve actually seen a woman “dry” shave her legs while driving. At the light she stepped out of the car, dusted herself off & got back in like nothing. I couldn’t believe it!
i do my makeup in public only when i have an early morning meeting. but normally, i would do my face in the bathroom at work. i don’t like people staring at me, watching me work my magic on my face.
shit does that mean i can’t trim my pubes on the train either?
I dislike seeing women doing that. I keep picturing that the train will jolt and they slip and stab the pencil or mascara brush in their eye… the way I see it is that if you need to put on your face before going out, wake up earlier and do it behind closed doors.
Wow, people cut their nails on the train? Gross. And the plucking the eyebrows thing bothers me too. :-/
I’ve seen girls do their makeup on the train before. If it were a long train ride and really early I’d probably do it too, gives me that much more time to sleep in the morning. As long as the girls aren’t giving themselves a Mach 10-level makeover, it wouldn’t bother me.
I felt self-conscious the several times I did my makeup on the bus/ train. I can just feel the stares… I wouldn’t do it unless I was running incredibly late or it was something very important.
I dont jack with my makeup outside the house because I dont want a large purse with all that crap in it.
I don’t take a train anywhere, as SD doesn’t have such a thing, but I could totally see myself making use of my long train commute to do my makeup. I’m the person who wakes up “just in time.” As in, just in time to shower, brush my teeth, brush my hair, and fly out the door. I always forget to calculate in time for makeup, or even breakfast. Makeup generally takes me like 15 minutes (mainly because I take my time to check email and do other random things at the same time). Now if I’m already sitting on the train for an hour, I might as well make use of that time that I’d otherwise be doing nothing. So, even though I don’t do it now, I could totally see myself doing it if I had that long train commute. All that other stuff, though… eww! There’s just something gross about cutting nails or removing hair in public.
I don’t know how women could do their makeup on the train, especially applying eyeliner. The train moves around, I don’t know how they could make an even line. It really grosses me out to see someone clip their nails on the train. If she’s plucking her brows, she should at least put the hair in a tissue or something.
never. Make up should hv been done at home with ur door close instead of in train like a performance…
juz that~those girls who can “transform” from zero make up to another (pretty) face reli amazed me…can hardly take my eyes off fm them.
u know how hard to control ur eyeliner when the train s moving?
However…In compare with Taiwan girls…

i think it is incredibly gross – it’s an intimate thing, and it’s akin to “getting dressed”, therefore, it REALLY should not be done in public. Plus, think of all the germs and stuff floating about on a subway train…getting into your makeup. Also, you have probably started to sweat/get oily before you could put your makeup on anyways. Yeech.
I think it is a private matter besides for applying lip chap/gloss. Everything else should be done behind closed doors, public washrooms don’t even do it for me.
running fingers through my hair – yes.
others – NO!
the title of your post sounds dirty.
anyhow, I don’t think I’ve ever done any of those things in front of anyone, not even boyfriends or family… but that’s just me. it doesn’t bother me when others do it. if it’s not a fluid-to-fluid transmission that could actually get me sick, it doesn’t bother me.
Come on! It’s not THAT bad…if you want unhygienic, what abt those people who pick their noses…or the guys who scratch their balls…or people who haven’t washed their hands after the toilet and then go on public transport…
@Ling Tung - I think everyone agrees that those things are unhygienic.

i do it b/c i don’t have any time. i’m sitting on the train anyway & stuck there for 1/2 an hour. prob is that usually there aren’t any seats. i can’t stand & do my makeup & hang on to the pole for dear life in case i fall onto someone. so if i have to take the train, i have myself made up already. but when i drive myself or someone drives me, i do my makeup in the car. i don’t care how others think about that. i’ve often got my foot on the gas pedal while pressing my lashes with a curler. it’s easy to press 2 things at once!
I love to be efficient on trains~ Yes i would do my makeup on trains but only if i’m running super late. Other than that, I can do other things like read over my files before seeing patients or go over notes
I would do that in a bathroom. o__o
Doing your make up on the train is alright but cutting your nails or plucking your eyebrows is just disturbing.
I always wondered isn’t it scary for girls to put on eyeliner during a train ride? Do girls ever poke themselves in the eye because the train is moving?
i feel the same way and will only do it at home. i don’t even feel comfortable doing it in the car!
I would never in a million years do that! It is just plain rude to the other passengers around you. I’d spend the time reading… besides, my makeup routine is like 10mins and i dont think waking up 10mins earlier is all that difficult!
i honestly would only brush my hair in public. in my highschool i’ve seen people brush their teeth and put deoderent on in the middle of class. the teachers saw it too and didn’t do anything about it. it was sick!
i must say that that is pretty disgusting … & don’t understand how they can possibly do there makeup on a moving train ? my makeup would probably go all over the show lol … but yes , i couldn’t help but laugh when you were talking about the lady plucking her eyebrows .. a pretty , unexpected thing to do on a train really XD
I was studying abroad in Japan and a lot of girls over there do their make up on the train. Unfortunately it’s affected me a bit. I used to never bring out anything make up related in public, but nowadays I don’t mind too much brushing my hair real quick or putting on chapstick or something.
Clipping your nails in public is gross. When I was in Japan a girl in my class clipped her nails during class. YEA, during CLASS! She sat right in the front too. The teacher never said anything but….it was really distracting!
It can’t actually work, I believe so.
