  • Feeling the burn…

I’ve had some pretty serious injuries in my life. Broken bones, torn muscles and other tissues, getting beaten up by pipes, bad knee, etc. I always thought I had a high tolerance for pain. Maybe a bit masochist, but I would wonder from time to time if I could survive torture.

A few weeks ago, something happened to me and I realized that I wouldn’t be able to. While pouring boiling water from the kettle to another container, I accidentally poured some (a lot) on my other hand. It caught the first two fingers and thumb. It didn’t hurt too much right away, so I quickly let cold water run over it while I finished pouring the water. Usually, after any kind of burn, I would put toothpaste over it. The mint would keep it cool and sort of sooth the pain away. I usually use the Crest Mint toothpastes, but we ran out so I had to use the Sensodyne that was there. Not only was there no cooling affect, it hurt like hell, so I rinsed it off with the running cold water and asked Mrs. jigg to look up remedies online.

It felt great with the cold water, but within 30 seconds of stopping this treatment, my fingers felt like they were on fire. I didn’t shower yet, so that was a real struggle. I knew any drop of hot water on it would shoot pain down my arm, so I had to be careful. After what felt like the longest shower I have ever taken, I put some aloe on it, as Mrs. jigg read off WebMD. Aloe worked only if I blew on it to cool it. After about 5 mind when it sort of dried, the burning pain came back.

We had to catch our flight to San Francisco early in the morning, which meant we would only have a few hours of sleep. The pain was just too great. I began looking up home remedies. It suggested everything from toothpaste to honey, to sliced vegetables, to dripping hot wax! I took some Motrin and tried to sleep. After laying in pain for an hour, I took Mrs. jigg’s suggestion and made an ice water pack. I read somewhere not to use ice, so I filled up a ziplock bag with a combination of ice and water, put some Aquafor ointment (the medicated ointment I used for my tattoos) on it to keep it moist and just let the ice water pack sit on top of my hand as I tried to sleep. It worked and I knocked out–only to wake up about an hour later when the ice melted and the water was warming up.  I just tried to ignore it as much as possible and was thankful that the pain was now tolerable–almost like how a fresh tattoo feels like.

Throughout the weekend, I just kept on putting on Aquafor and by the end of the trip, there was virtually no pain left.  The skin turned black and after a week or two, began peeling off.  It pretty much looks as good as new now.  I have been burned so many times cooking, but nothing can prepare you for this.  I wondered if there was going to be scarring or something.

Anyway, have you ever had a serious burn?  If so, was there anything else that happened in your life that hurt more?

  • Sounds like a pretty bad burn for it to have hurt for so long… jeeeez. Hope it gets better.  I’ve been relatively lucky with injuries *knock on wood*.  But I AM getting a tat on friday… and I’m AFRAID! lol.. did it hurt a lot to get yours?

  • @nimbusthedragon - The pain really depends on where it’s going to be.  Where is your new tattoo located?

I have one on my left shoulder and the other on my right forearm.  Neither of which hurt much.

  • @jigg -  left shoulder, actually, hahaha… or right.  Haven’t quite decided yet.  I know there’s pain involved.. but being the wimp I am (which is part of the reason I’m getting one, to face my fears…hah) I suppose I was wondering what KIND of pain it resembles, if anything.  Everyone’s been telling me “bee sting”… which doesn’t comfort me much lol.

  • @nimbusthedragon - It’s doesn’t resemble anything I know of.  Just imagine that it’s like an annoying electric shock that’s being dragged across your skin.  Much more annoying than painful.

If your tattoo artist tells you to use A&D cream, don’t listen to him/her and get Aquaphor.  Your tattoo will heal faster and better.  A&D has no medicated properties.  But whatever you do, DON’T USE NEOSPORIN!
Anyway, how big is your tattoo going to be?

  • Good god, boiling temperature must be pretty high in NY.

  • #@)(!*$&5  ouch

  • @jigg - I`ll keep that in mind… but just curious, not that I was going to use it, why not neosporin lol?  Anyway, it’s not that big… but respectable… The best thing I can compare it to is the circumference of a coffee mug, size-wise. It’s going to be a goldfish, for various reasons, haha.

  • The pain I am about to speak of did not happen to me, but to someone I know. They went through a kidney transplant. And I believe that it is the worse pain any man will endure. The doctors inserted a tube through the urethra while being conscious. The tube was bigger than the urethra passage way. I was told it was the most painful thing this guy ever went through with all the surgeries he’s been through.

  • @nimbusthedragon - Neosporin causes issues with the ink.

And before you get the tattoo–draw it on yourself first (since you can draw).  Have it for a few days and see what you think.  The last thing you want is to regret getting the design.

  • @jigg - Don’t worry haha… I’ve been drawing and redrawing it for weeks now.  I didn’t choose this randomly, hahaha.  I think I’ve figured out a design I like.  ^_^  Thanks for all the advice. PS: You should do a post on all your tats + photos!

  • burn gel. did i mention that to you when you were in sf? *_* can’t remember anymore

  • The worst pain I’ve felt was at the dentist. I have soft teeth, so I get cavities a lot. I’m used to the needle, but one day, for some reason the dentist couldn’t numb the spot he wanted. He tried freezing it 3 times, I could still feel every time he would test it out. I told him I could still feel, but he went away anyway. I thought maybe that wasn’t the exact spot he needed to work on and I would only feel a little bit, but it was, and I felt everything. I felt like I was in hell. I was even praying to God to get me through it. Because I know the process of getting a filling, I would calm myself down by telling myself it’s almost over. I was crying and trying to tell him how much it hurt, but he just kept going. After that, like you, I felt I could take anything. But after reading this, I don’t know anymore lol.

  • I’ve been quite fortunate (or maybe just careful) in my life that I’ve had no serious injuries–ever. I think my worst is my current super dry skin (due to dry weather) that itches so badly. I scratch so badly (through my clothes even) that I’ve bruised up! LoL. Pretty lame that those are as bad injuries as I’ve gotten ever in life. I just don’t do anything that warrants hurting myself. Maybe a paper cut here and there, but can’t think of any injuries at all. LoL. Man I sound like I never do anything!

Wait, I’ve hammered my fingers a number of times! But that goes away pretty quickly. Yeah, I’ve helped remodel many homes (and actually do a lot of the work myself), but I’ve yet to injure myself in any memorable way. Maybe I just have a bad memory.

  • I’ve never had a super serious burn, but have had some that blistered due to not being careful around the oven.

My bilateral muscle transfer, hip release and hamstring release surgery hurt a hell of a lot more though.

  • I had boiling water spill on my arm – a terrible first degree burn that left a visible scar the size of half dollar coin.  I was three when that happened and I recalled adults debating the pros and cons of soy sauce as a possible home remedy on my burn. -__-

  • I got a really bad burn (two, actually) a few weeks ago when I made chicken in a cast iron skillet. I forgot the handle was still 400 degrees and brushed up against it with my right forearm. I basically burned off my skin. I just put Neosporin on it to keep it from being infected, but nothing else would have really helped… *sigh* I have a huge scar on my arm now, it sucks.

I still have a burn scar (though it’s not very visible anymore) from a water burn, like you, from when I was a kid.

  • im no doctor but black peeling skin, not good.

  • Never had a serious burn, the worst I’ve had was dislocating my elbow.  I don’t think that normally hurts much, but maybe some nerves got twisted.

  • Sorry dude, burns suck ass and they hurt like hell. Luckily, no significant burns for me ever in my life, but one of my childhood friends was burned with hot water when he was a new born baby (happened in Korea when medical care wasn’t as advanced). As a result, he lost 3 of his outer left fingers and his whole arm was just rippled with scars. It’s a disability he’s had to deal with to this current day. … Your entry invoked my own thoughts of injuries I had that has made me look back in regret. I will write an entry  on it now…

  • @nimbusthedragon - I definitely have a pics of my tats somewhere on this blog!  Anyway, did you get yours yet?

    -ray leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • @jigg - Yeah, posted about it a week ago.. ish… let me find the link and get back to you haha

  • @nimbusthedragon - Yeah?  I didn’t see it.  And your blog is one of the only ones I still follow somewhat anymore.  Weird.

    -ray leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • @jigg - http://nimbusthedragon.xanga.com/756819244/item/  And heh, flattered you follow my silly meanderings.  Cheers.
