  • Addicted

I have an addictive personality. Actually to rephrase, I easily get addicted to things that interest me. I stopped smoking because I was addicted, yet after almost 13 years, I still think about smoking almost everyday. I stopped playing games on my PS3 because the more I play, the less restraint I have. I don’t watch TV because I forget about everything else. I simply cannot do anything I like in moderation because I get hooked.

Lately, Mrs. jigg has been jealous of Richard Sharpe, I man who I engross my attention to any free time I have. I pour through the pages of his adventures on my commute to and from work, right after dinner, before the lights go off at night in the bedroom and the second there is enough light in the morning to make out the words. I am addicted to the Sharpe novels and I cannot stop reading.

Richard Sharpe is like James Bond, gone back in time to the colonial periods where England was always at war. Sharpe is a soldier and through about 20 novels, gets promoted through the ranks. The author Bernard Cromwell, uses real life historical battles and place his fictional character in it. The plot is lively and descriptive, giving you a real feel of how these wars were fought 200 years ago.

So far, I’ve read 5 of his books and completing the 6th as soon as this blog entry is finished. I would have read 3 books in the last 4 days.

Mrs. jigg always comments about how I lack moderation in anything. What can I say? Go big or go home.

Is there anything you love doing, but can’t stop?

  • LOL.  I just wrote about this.  my most recent vice is facebook, but I’ve given this up for now.

I also am planning to read 50 books this year. :D

  • PC gaming is something I’m addicted to. But I’m learning how to resist this.

  • @pinksoda117 -  lol.

Jigg, this is an interesting insight about you.

  • @leprovocateur - lol.  Good insight or bad insight?

  • I have fleeting moments of obsession~ and by fleeting that means 1-2 days at most.  I dislike the notion of being addicted to something or someone.  I have had consistent hobbies: collecting pens and reading everything about Seinfeld.

  • i also have an addictive personality.

  • when it comes to the novels I am just like you – when it comes to songs I rape my ears – when it comes to sports I make my bones crushed – I am just like you!! lolz…

these books you are telling seems interesting – let me finish – undone by karen slaughter then I’ll try that series…

what about the dark tower fever?? have you finished sk??

  • @alwateen - I haven’t read any of the Dark Tower books.  I’ve read maybe like 3-4 Stephen King books.  I liked them, but they aren’t page turners like this series I’m reading.  If you’re into history, especially with colonial times, the Sharpe series is for you!  At the end of each book, there are historical notes that discuss what’s fact and fiction.

  • I don’t know if you’re aware of these, but the Flashman novels are an interesting counterpoint to the Sharpe series. . .:

Mrs. Jigg will probably like them even less, however. . .

  • @Ewithani - That’s awesome!  Thanks for the news.  I might give them a try one day after Sharpe is complete.

  • I also have an addictive personality that’s why I usually stop myself before I am all into it. I know once I start it will be hard to break. But occasionally I will crack and something will hold my attention so firmly that I cannot pull myself away before it’s too late, in that case I’m also someone who gets easily bored. I allow myself to indulge in it obsessively until I absolutely get sick and bored of it and then I’m released.

  • Sometimes having an addictive personality is a bad thing. My boyfriend’s best friend gets addicted to anything that feels good to him like drinking, smoking, painkillers, etc.

  • @LolliPooP - I’m NEVER bored.  I’ve been bored ONCE in the past 10 or so years.  Literally.  I even remember the exact moment–it was at a NJ Nets game.  lol.

  • yeah i can’t do anything in moderation either… it’s all extremes for me.

  • you should turn ur addiction into something useful like trading, or starting a business…

I think I have an addictive personality too which is why it’s cool when my addiction aligns with my goals.

  • @Yosho - Reading is useful to me.  Trading and starting a business would consume too much of my time with “work.”  I don’t believe that my life is about work.  I work to live, not live to work.

  • @jigg - oh yeahh i agree with you 100%!!  life is so short

i get in phases of addiction -  makeup buying lol (i blame youtube guru’s…well if they think so lol) and i am also addicted to chinese drama….when i watch one episode i HAVE TO watch the next until i finish it lol

  • @pinksoda117 - hahaha i heart you E!

  • Japanese drama, if I start watching one ep and I like it, I can’t stop….

  • I have an addictive personailty as well, though yours sounds more extreme. books, games, TV shows…anything and everything.

  • I’m TOTALLY checking out those sharpe books!!!

  • Plain and simple, 3d modeling. Feed your addiction, it’s what motivates you in other areas. That’s how I look at it.

  • @souxie - OMG… I’d be really surprised if you didn’t LOVE them.  I started another book yesterday and I’m almost done with it!  The library can’t get me them in time!

Make sure you read it in order though– Sharpe’s Tiger.  I read one book out of order because it was available at the library and I regret it so much because it kind of spoiled what happened in the previous books.

  • @jigg - thanks! i searched for it on amazon and there were so many that i couldn’t figure out where to start. excited =D

im so bad. i should be on your wife’s side and tell you to stop obsessing over the books! sorry mrs jigg!

  • @souxie - It’s funny because before she moved to NY, I was always under the assumption that we both read a lot.  After she moved in with me, we both realized I read like 8x more books than she does.  Every 1 book she reads, I read 8 (which is about every 3 weeks).
