Moved… Again
This past weekend, Mrs. jigg and I got evicted from our condo. Kidding. I was renting from my sister and by mutual agreement, we decided to pat ways. She’s renting the place to someone else for more and I moved back to my parent’s at Staten Island.
My parents have a relatively large townhouse and they’re both pretty much retired because they both can’t physically work. By moving back, we can look after them and save money at the same time. Even after paying them rent and such, I think of save about $10k a year.
Mrs jigg and I are planning on saving for our own place. With dual income, we’ll probably be able to have a down-payment in about two years. We haven’t talked about exactly where yet, but so far, we decided that the two things we absolutely want is space and being around good schools for our future children.
So far, I’ve moved four times in three years. I’m kind of sick of moving so I’m glad we’ll be here for at least two years before moving again. I had hoped that we would get rid of things, but we wound up moving like 95% of our things back.
I’m going to try and sell all my useless things like CD/DVD collection. I also have a lot of clothes that I don’t wear anymore and will be donating them. Everytime I move, I feel like there’s always so much clutter.
I guess the worst thing part is the commute to work. It takes us about 25 mins longer than our previous place, which means we had to wake up earlier. The good thing is, I now have more time for reading and blogging.
Anyway, before moving here, we got rid of a ton of things in the basement but it seems like we have to get rid of even more things. Apparently, Asians are known to be hoarders and they keep EVERYTHING. I’m glad my dad is open to the idea of throwing away useless things. My mom on the other hand had to keep away because watching us throw away things was painful to watch.
Are you a hoarder or do you get rid of things when you realize you don’t need it?

I am not Asian but I am a hoarder, too. The idea of moving scares me.
sigh…im a hoarder… it’s annoying > <
I just spoke with my parents about some stuff at home that they should REALLY throw out.
John’s mom is a hoarder so I throw things away when she’s not there. haha.
PS – nice meeting you and the Mrs. at Sydney’s birthday party. LOL
I am definitely not a hoarder. When I moved to my new place, I believe I had a total of 4 boxes, one large tub, and just my furniture. But then again, it’s just me. And I’m still in school…so I guess that would make a difference eh? I hate it when I see documents dated back two or three years. Ergh.
asian people hoard everything! it must be embedded into our genes. every now and then, my older sis will clean out her apt and bring me bags of stuff to see if i want them before they go to goodwill. I do the same to my lil bro. Eventually, nothing gets thrown out, just rotated around.
I try to minimize clutter. but when my kiddo tries to give old toys to goodwill, i’m the one saying, “Oh honey- i bought that for you when u were a baby. we have to keep that one…. and this one…”
good luck saving for a home! how exciting!

small world! Nice meeting you too.
i’m a hoarder to an extent. i keep things that i think i will need later on i.e. old class notes/books to reference to etc. but when it comes to “sentimental” things from past loves/family members etc that i don’t really use or anything — i don’t have a problem taking a digital picture of it and donating it or throwing it out…only virtual space needed there…
donate mr. jiggs.
goodwill’s max tax write off for donations is 500 bux a year I think
@BenelliMan - But I think I have more tax benefits HAVING her around! lol.
-ray leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Definitely a hoarder here….but my house is neat
Me? Hoard? Nooooooooo…I actually tend to laugh at hoarders. I don’t often allow attachment to too many things or ppl. (Only child, right here) I keep what I need, give away what I don’t, and attempt to avoid buying the unnecessary. I do have a headphone fetish though.
Sad to admit, I’m a hoarder. Funny thing is, I live with people who are hoarders too. They always try to throw away my stuff but when it’s theirs, it’s worst. But at the same time, I’m glad they do what they do, otherwise, I’d still have 5 boxes of junk laying in the garage.
I’m a sentimentalist so I’m a hoarder.
i moved once a year for 10 years so i tried not to accumulate too much stuff.. now that i own, i have too much junk. I do not look forward to moving anytime soon.
i used to be a hoarder when I was living at my parents house, before I was married. But that was also the house I spent 20 years in. So things accumulate and the house was big so i was able to stick stuff in closets and corners and forget about them. When we moved out, the space was smaller. I was forced to throw away lots of stuff and since moving out, I just became annoyed of clutter. So I don’t hoard like I used to.
Not a hoarder. I’m very OCD and everything has to be perfectly organized, down to can labels all facing the same way, 100′s of DVD’s alphabetized and clothing hung by type, then color.
my parents are crazy hoarders and i always yell at them for it.
I make an effort to throw away most things now… I believe living sparsely definitely helps clear the mind of clutter as well.
haha, I hate to admit, but i’m a hoarder. Not as bad as the older generation of course, but I do hoard! Example, I keep tickets to shows from a date with my girlfriend. She does to! Perhaps it’s a weird thing to do, but the pile of tickets is getting out of control. Maybe I should start throwing them away. lol.
Sorry about your new commute. I am also saving up to buy a new house. I would think that houses in NY must be more expensive compared to Texas.
I can’t stand clutter.. the fewer things the better.
Little Neck has a great school district.
I am like my dad… I am a packrat – i keep everything. my husband is purge-happy which drives me insane sometimes lol. i guess its good considering our house gets clutter fast which a little one. good thing you and mrs jigg dont have kids because they come with lots of stuff too (diaper, strollers, crib, pack and play, toys)
def not a hoarder. i alwys welcome spending and making space for new things, HAHAHHAA. i’m serious.
Living with the in-laws ain’t gonna be easy for her! You being the mediator ain’t gonna be cakewalk either! Good luck to you both.
I had cards in my room from my 1st birthday.
I’m 28.
My boyfriend (jokingly?) calls me a hoarder. I don’t think I am though! I just have a hard time parting with clothes…that’s all…
I totally agree with you on the whole Asians and hoarding thing. Growing up, my mom taught me to always keep things “just in case”. Thanks to that mentality, my room has always been cluttered, and, like your roles of your parents, my dad was always the one telling us to purge, while mom wanted us to keep stuff.
my mom has my collection of casette tapes from when I was little, and she won’t throw them away. Even though we don’t even have a casette tapes player.
I didn’t know you were moving?! Some friend. Is that why you said i COULD have crashed at your place. haha. Does this mean I finally get your George Foreman grill? Actually I don’t need it anymore. I am a hoarder, and seriously have no more room.
