  • Allergies

This is my third or fourth year with allergies (I lost count) and I’m DYING. It haven’t had good sleep in over 2 weeks! Three different kinds of meds aren’t working for me (Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra). As a last resort, I scheduled an appointment to see my father’s doctor who does acupuncture.

My father has been doing acupuncture for his allergies for almost five years has not had to take medication at all. He occasionally uses eyedrops (Naphcon A, it works better than prescription!).

Acupuncture is an interesting experience. I would never have done it if my father didn’t recommend it himself. Basically, the acupuncturist will put really thin needles into specific points in the body. Most of it didn’t hurt, but there was one in my back that felt like someone hits your funny bone and you have a reflexive reaction. I felt 3 needles on my back, one by each elbow (closer to my forearm) and two on each side of my nostril. He then attached some wires to the ones in my arm and one in my back. There was a steady flow of current and my muscles just pulsed. This went on for like 15 minutes and that was it.

Supposedly, you don’t feel any different after the first treatment and it takes till the third or fourth. Yesterday I felt a little better but last night, I was dying again. I just want to get this thing over with so I can finally sleep! The lack of sleep has turned me into a zombie at work.

Do you have allergies? What have you been doing about it? Would you try acupuncture?

  • i did acupuncture before, it wasnt for the allergies though… i did it for something else and i didnt get the pulse (must be different kind of acupuncture too?). it went for about a month or so, 1-2x per week. that year my allergies wasnt as bad… so yeah, i think acupuncture is great rather than claratyne/those antihistamines tablets because they just dont work for me…

  • I haven’t, but I can try acupuncture if it helps with allergies. I do have it, and I usually end up getting cold medicine over the counter. I don’t know if it’s allergies, but I’m sure it is. It’s making me sneeze, runny nose, sore throat, and cough. Same symptoms as a cold right? Been having it every year for the past 3 years.

I hear that sometimes you can prevent it by taking claritin once a day during the spring time before spring is actually here. So in Texas, you can start taking in February because March is when it’s not as cold and flowers start blooming.

  • benedryl is the only damn thing that works but it makes me so incredibly drowsy.  I can’t wait until the winter when all the damn trees and plants DIE.

  • trust me, take benedryl at night. especially if you can’t sleep at night. make sure not to take it too late or you will be groggy in the AM, but usually if i take one at night, i’m able to survive the rest of the next day with the drowsiness. TRUST ME! nothing worked for me either.

  • Yes, I have allergies. I’ve been taking Claritin up to this past week when it stopped working. Now I switched to Zyrtec and it helped, although not 100%. My boyfriend takes Benedryl before he goes to bed and that works for him. As for acupuncture, I’m reluctant to try that.

  • tell me the results when you’re done, i’m skeptical

  • Yeah, I have allergies, but they’re not that bad.

  • Jigg, but here’s the thing. Living in New York, especially Manhattan, you would think there would be less pollen in the air since there’s soooo much concrete around us and very few trees and shrubery, but obviously not so. I’m dying as well. I stayed home from work today. Claritin has helped a little. Get well.

  • @ij80i - It’s actually really bad Manhattan and Staten Island.  Much of it has to do with the male trees that have been planted in the past 10 years.

  • Went yesterday afternoon.  He did the same spots.  The “reflexive” one on the back was on my left mid-back. Was that the same as yours?  Mine jumped and it killed.

  • @lfespock - Yeah, I jumped, but it didn’t really hurt.

When do you have to go back?

  • Tomorrow afternoon.  So that was the same spot for you?  How funny.

  • I used to have horrible allergies, only heightened by the fact that I was terribly allergic to my rabbit, so I ended up getting allergy shots, which helped me for a while. They don’t cure, but they’re meant to help increase your body’s ability to handle whatever you’re allergic to. (You can read more about those here.) After my rabbit died, though, I stopped going, and used Nasonex (which ONLY worked if I first took Afrin– seriously… it’s amazing! If you have nasal allergy symptoms, that is.) and Benadryl quick-dissolving strips. I swear by the two things I linked to, whenever anyone mentions allergies, and I have yet to encounter someone I’ve suggested them to tell me they didn’t work for them (especially the Afrin). I really hope they help you, if you try them, and that your allergies get better! If you continue acupuncture, I hope that helps, too.

  • I used to have bad allergies that couldn’t be knocked out with Claritin or Zyrtec. The only medicine that worked for me was a strong one called Triaminicin. There was an older version that worked extremely well but was taken off the market for making people high as a kite, but the newer version works great too. It’s available OTC.

  • My husband just started getting weekly allergy shots.  His allergies were horrible… he’s do Flonase (nasal spray), Claritin, and prescription eye drops.  The shots have seemed to have help tremendously.  Maybe try that?

  • @miss_lyrical - My allergies stopped after the second appointment with acupuncture–though it could be that it coincided with the heavy rain we experienced during that week.
